Xander Not The Treasure The Sox Were Looking For!
Xander Bogaerts may be one of the hottest rising stars in all of Major League Baseball, but oddly enough he was not the Bogaerts that the Red Sox went to Aruba to scout. Xanders older by one minute twin brother Jair was actually the player that Boston ineternational scout originally set out to watch play. Jair had a great showing at his try out with the Sox but the younger Xander was strickened with chicken pox and couldn't make the first days of tryouts. When the Sox scouts showed interest in Jair he pleaded with them to allow Xander to try out. After getting clearance from his mom the bed ridden Xander went to a special try out and had a tremendous showing.
Boston ended up signing both the brothers and moving them to the Dominican League where they were faced with there first big challenges. The pitching there was much tougher then they had experienced in Aruba with nearly every pitcher throwing over 90 miles an hour. This was significantly faster than the pitcher they were facing in Aruba but Xander rose to the occasion. Xander had a tremendous season hitting a team-high.314 with three homers, seven doubles and five triples, 42 RBIs and 39 runs in 63 games on route to being named the Red Sox's Latin Program Player of the Year. His brother Jair did not fare so well hitting a disappointing.170 in 46 games and had to repeat his season.
Xander moved up to Single-A Greenville. Xander did well in Greenville finishing third on the team with 16 home runs, leading all players with a. 509 slugging percentage and driving in 42 runs despite only playing in 72 games. After a great 2011 year Xander was moved up to Double A Salem and then rapidly bounced up to Triple A Pawtucket. His brother Jair was traded to the Cubs where he would eventually end his career. After stellar seasons in the minors the red sox finally gave him his call up to the bigs and he played his first game against the SF Giants. He went on to be one of the Sox most productive players in the post season helping them to capture a World Series Title. While Xander was not the Bogaerts the Sox were originally searching for he is the Bogaerts they will be investing in for now and the future.
